Ok here is the situation. I adopted a dog from a local shelter on Saturday 10/6. It is now Tuesday. We found some, Not a lot, fleas on her. There are very few but we are taking her to the vet tommorrrow just to be safe. My question is how much should I treat the house now. She has laid in very few spots and sleeps in her crate at night. What should I do to get rid of fleas in the house that I am not ever sure are there. What are that chances that we might have a flea problem from having her in the house for 3 days? Should I be worried because I am. Could we have a serious problem? Anybody please HELP ME!!!!

Actually..you should be ok. Typically fleas only leave dogs if the dog gets overcrowded. I had a major flea outbreak on one of my dogs over the summer. I did have my yard treated and did a major double dose of Frontline and Advantix per my vet. I never had a problem with them in my house. We have been a happy flee-less family eversince!!

Well, I wouldn't panic yet! If you only see a few fleas on her then chances are they've pretty much stayed on her and even if a few have taken up residence in your home it won't be too difficult to get rid of them.

Start using a flea and tick preventative on her as soon as she's seen the veterinarian. Frontline Plus is one of the best. This is a topical/spot-on type treatment that kills fleas almost immediately and lasts for around 30 days before you need to reapply it.

As for your home, there are several options just to be sure that the little critters don't become house-guests. There are sprays that you can use on the carpet/furniture etc. and 'flea-bombs' which are pressurized cans of chemicals that you can activate in your home and the vapor kills all the fleas within a certain distance. If your dog's only been in one or two rooms you probably only need to treat those rooms. Also you can wash all her bedding, cushions etc. in really hot water in the washing machine to make sure there aren't any fleas in there.

If you want and are especially worried you can call a professional pest control company to come and treat your house. It costs a bit more though and probably isn't necessary right now.

You can find more info. on fleas and ticks at the url below. Best of luck!

Fairly likely they're in your house because female fleas lay HUNDREDS of eggs, that drop off into your house and may hatch now or months later. You could, and probably should, spray but there aren't many sprays that kill flea eggs, which is what will mostly be in your house at the moment. You could ask a vet to order in Skoosh, that kills eggs. Or you could wait til you see fleas in the house - then you'll have to spray, vacuum the next day, then repeat the process a week later to get the newly hatched eggs!

The vet will give you treatment to keep your pet covered, most probably Frontline, Advantage or Revolution, but just be aware that you might still see fleas around if they start hatching out in your house.

Oh - if you do decide to spray your house, don't get sucked in to using the cheap stuff from pet stores, they don't work. Stick to veterinary stuff.

If you want to be safe flea bomb the house now and in 10 days so you get all the eggs and such. for puppy, i like frontline and when i give my dogs their frontline i also give them capstar, my vet recommends capstar every week to keep stray fleas off since they seem to be SO bad this year. capstar kills the fleas already on the dog while frontline keeps them from coming back. but this year has been especially bad so ive been using the capstar every week or so too. it really helps.
