Was the first Butcher to discover this cut of meat from New York?
Or Maybe the Cow the Butcher discovered the cut was from New York? Or Perhaps that is the Steak most New Yorkers prefer?

Anyone know the real deal?

According to fact monster (link) it was first associated with Delmonico's restaurant in NYC circa 1835-1881. The cut of meat was called the Delmonico,NY strip and also Kansas City Strip steak.

It's just bragging rights. You could still be correct by calling it a Kansas City steak or a Delmonico steak among others. There is a New York Steak & Sea Food Company. Maybe somebody confused the wording with a company that packages meat in New York to a company that makes New York steaks.

It is partial because of the Delmonicos issues and as a former chef it is called a striploin, the N.Y part was something added by a restauantuer in the 1800's, but a NY strip steak can be boneless or have small loin bone in it, alot depends on the meat supplier.

It does not matter were you go in North America, you will find the term N.Y strip or sirloin, but go to Asia or Europe and there it will only be called a striploin or sirloin, even though a sirloin is another cut altogether boneless and from the lower region of the loin.

It is like the filet mignon here we call it just that, but in the UK they refer to it as a filet steak.

Probably cause the size of the steak is like the size of the buildings in New York, big/tall. So that is why they call New York the "Big Apple" & could be why they call the steak New York steak.

There's lots of cows in NY. Think outside the city. And I've never heard of NY steak and eggs.
