There are several different 4x4 drive systems in Jeeps. There are Jeeps with full-time 4x4 and also those with part-time 4x4. The difference between full-time 4x4 and part-time 4x4 is that the part-time has locked differentials (all wheels spin at the same speed when engaged), so you can't use it on pavement except when going in a straight line. But part-time 4x4 is good enough for getting unstuck from snow and such, and in normal 2-wheel-drive operation you save gas.
Sounds to me like you want 4WD capability to deal with snow traction now and then, so in that case, you might want to check out the Jeeps equipped with the part-time Command Trac system-- In normal use you leave it in 2-wheel-drive, but you can switch to 4WD with the locked diffs when the situation demands it (slippery surfaces, climbing out of snow ruts, etc.)
I had a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ (4.0L, auto trans) equipped with the part-time 4WD Command Trac system and it served me well for 10 years, through some pretty harsh winters in Buffalo, NY (which gets quite a lot of snow too). Never got stuck in the snow.
Current Jeep models like the Liberty and Wrangler have variants equipped with Command Trac I believe.
Hope this helps.

Well, its better to wait to have an 4WD Jeep if you are in a very snowy place, i understand you, i live in Quebec and when the show falls it falls un a great quantity. If you buy an 2wd RWD Will be an unoying thing, because the weight of the motor is in the front and the traction is in the rear so if if a snow storm with a FR car, you will be caught in the storm, so it better an 4x4 for this situation. Also you can buy a big GM FFcars, like the Buick park century, Pontiac Bonneville, Chevy Lumina, ETC, Hopes this helpps

Defiantely a 4 wheel drive Jeep. If not able to afford 4wd get a front wheel drive car. Four cylinder for good milage.I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee, 4 wd, that I like real well. It is good when we have snow and , being enclosed, is warm in winter. Two things about it I don't particularly like....Straight six cylinder, so the gas milage is not too good (14-16 mpg) and it rides rough (I'm 80 years old, ha, ha)
BTW The Jeep Wrangler (the little open jobber) is over priced and colder than all get out in winter. I drove one in China in 1947 as a U.S. Marine M.P.

I would go with Joeschmo above answer, but stay away from the Quadratrac full time four wheel drive system. While a good idea it will fail the viscous clutch some day and it really expensive to repair. This never was on the Cherokees, but several Grand Cherokees.
Good Luck

You definitly want 4WD in snow country. Besides, why on earth would you spend money on a Jeep and get a 2WD. If money is that big of an issue you don't want a Jeep anyhow as they are in the low to mid $30,000 range.

There are plenty of other types of 4 wheel drive vehicles you don't have to get a Jeep they are more expensive. Look on Craigslist.org for 4x4 or SUV but you'll be happy to have a 4x4 rather than a 2 wheel drive.
