Think of the word in parts: "share" "crop". It literally means sharing a part of your crop.

When someone has no land of his own, he can "borrow" part of someone's land and live and farm on it. In return, he is expected to "share crop" with the land owner.

The advantage for the farmer is clear: he has land he can use and pay for by giving his crop each season to the land owner instead of cash for rent.

The land owner gets an "employee" whom he doesnt have to pay. After all, the farmer is working the land for "free". The landowner gets the crops and only has to let the farmer live on land he already owns. Plus, he gets crops each season without working for them.
