The earlier the better, not that he'll actually drink much to start with but its good to practice. By about 6 months when you start putting him on solid foods, he will need a drink of water with his meal. Try to not give him squash or juice as they get used to it and start to refuse the water. Make sure when you give him the water, that until around 12 months old, the water should be boiled water but obviously cooled down.

6-9 months, the earlier the better as babies shouldn't have a bottle at all after 12 months. Non-spill beakers are bad for a child's teeth/gum development just like dummies (and bottles which is why you are advised not to use after 12 months) so a free flow one is better - if slightly messier. But water dries, its not that big a deal.
When your son is still drinking a lot of milk he will probably not really need water too but as he gets older and is eating more solid food that's when he'll get thirsty.

I got my son drinking from an anyway up cup at about 6-7 months, it was hard as they have to learn to suck in a different way. I got him to drink out of a normal beaker first, but that always got launched when he was nearly finished, so the non spill cups were a god send!

When you as his mother feels it is right. Trust your instincts, forget the "expert" advice. Breast milk contains everything your baby needs, if on formula your baby may need extra fluids, If your baby is a little older, and you feel you want to introduce water, then get him to suckle from a feeder cup, he will soon let you know if he finds this acceptable, but you need to persevere, most babies hate the change.. At the end of the day your baby also has a survival instinct, if he needs water he will take it! Just make sure that the water supply is good, that it is neither too hot nor too cold in comparison with his feeding, then your ok.

I started my son on water from a cup at about 11 months. Just make sure that they are old enough to drink water. Small babies will fill up on water and miss a feeding.

You should give your son a beaker and if he can hold onto it himself then he will be ready to drink from it.

I started offering a sippy cup to my son at 6 months but its only in the last few weeks (he's now 10 months) that he's actually got the hang of it. It does take time. But you can start offering him a cup at 6 months just to get him used to it.
