Hi. I am 16 and i'm a High School Sophomore (10th grade). I've been dreaming of being a pilot in USAF (Fighter if possible). But i heard the requirement is to have a good 20/20 eye vision. Unfortunately I don't :(

My left eye is normal but my right eye definitely is not good. I don't know what's my right eye problem exactly is cuz I havent go to the doctor and check it out yet. But it's definitely not 20/20.

I heard that even if you dont have 20/20 eye vision but u can still have it fixed by Surgery or some kinda Laser Surgery and still qualified to be a pilot. Is that true?

I really need lots of advice in this area at this point so I know what I should do in my High School years.

Thank you!

Starting in May 2007,

Lasik and PRK eye surgery are allowed for USAF flight school candiates.

They AF won't pay for the surgery, you have to get it yourself, before you apply.

Vision requirements are no worse than 20/50 uncorrected.

20/20 corrected.

In order to qualify for Class 1 Flying in the Air Force or the Navy, your uncorrected vision cannot be worse than 20/50 in either eye and both must correct to 20/20.

without taking a side i would note that the combat capabilites of US fighters have been proven in combat whereas almost none of the newer russian fighters have been used if a real fight. a lot of the things they are credited with comes from sales agents. the Mig 21 is an old warrior that is no longer considered a front line aircraft. the FAS is not an unbiased source about anything, i would ignore whatever they say. the US pilots get far more hours of stick time that any others in the world. they also have access to programs like top gun and red flag that other countries cannot afford. all other things being equal the better trained and more experenced pilot will always win.

Your best info on this should come from the Air Force. But, I think they can work with you with corrected vision. The amount og correction is probably the question/
Good luck
PS: Try writing to the Air Force Acadmey in Colorado Springs for the Info. Then when you apply to go there they will see you have shown interest for years
