I'm not talking about taking God's name in vain, with things like "God d-mn" or Jesus's name, but what about "cussing"? Is saying the "f" word a lot a sinful act? Why?/Not? Is saying "hell" and "damn" a lot sinful acts? Why?/Why not? All those words that are "naughty" but do not take God's name in vain -- how are they sinful if they are indeed sinful?

If saying these things makes us "impure," how is that true?

Yes. I should've made that distinction: I mean using cuss words as expletives, like when you stub your toe or drop a weight on your foot at the gym. Not when you're actively trying to hurt another person-- I know THAT is a sin. Thx to Bearcub and others for pointing out that discrepency.

Bad language, swearing, cussing it all relevant. I do not use that language around my folks or others I know it might offend but get me around my sisters & friends and we can swear for half an hour and not repeat our selfs.
No it is not a sin. My god is not a micro manager.

I don't think rude language necessarily means a person is impure or sinful, esp. if the person is using it only as an expletive and not trying to insult another person.

For me, that is the dividing line. If a man hits his thumb with a hammer and says some rude words like the F word or the S word, I don't think that's a sin. But if he is using those words against another person, that is probably a sin.

Whether or not that sin means he is "impure," I wouldn't venture a guess.

My opinion?....
I suppose, yes, if you do it by mistake.
(I sure hope so!)
But accepting vulgar talk into your everyday language will just end up distancing yourself, if only a bit, from that which is pure and perfect. It is perhaps not the words themselves, but the willingness to use "ugliness". I am talking on a spiritual level, to feebly attempt to explain this whole WHY.

Here´s another way to try to help visualise this. I´m sorry if it seems far out, but I´ll give it a try anyway. Check out Masaru Emoto´s experiments - he has done amazing research with the crystalisation of water - you have to see these to believe this. In short, when he exposes water to recititations of holy scriptures (I have seen the examples for Kuran), the water forms the most beautiful crystals - like a snowflake. This even works if he writes the words "in the Name of God" and just tapes it on the glass. So these WORDS actually have an attached spritual significance.
If he writes bad words on a paper and attaches it to the glass of water, the water creates crystals which look very different, strange and not even pretty.

So to follow up, using a lot of vulgar language will actually have a negative effect even on your physical body, since we are made of 2/3 water. It will also affect the spiritual side of you, since it will make you all the less receptive to God´s influence - maybe block it a bit more than otherwise, if you follow me. This would, in my eyes, make it quite difficult to remain a "man/woman of God" when the connection to God Himself is disturbed.
Hope you understood this a bit and don´t think I´m crazy!
Take care!

I think you can answer this question, hmmm...let's see in the whole big picture "who" is without sin? Who can live their life without sin? It does not matter how hard you try you are not capable of doing that. So if I just sin a little is that sin, uh yes, and if sin is sin.....hello. I would venture to say it is not an example to set before others if you profess to being a man or woman of God because you will not lead others to him in such a manner and in their eyes you will be seen as a hypocrite. In the overall scheme of things though cussing is probably not a determining factor in the permanent state of your immortal soul. You can't put God in a box and this is not I am sure one of his "big" wrong things....ya think?

Cussing really isn't a matter of religion. It's a matter of tact. People who use foul language give the impression of crude, offensive, and uneducated. I find it repulsive to hear people cussing, and will openly ask that person to kindly not use such language in front of me. There is no purpose for it, it doesn't prove anything, and makes people look stupid.

If you inspire to be a man or woman of God, that means that you try to be as much like God as possible. So, I would say cussing would not promote a Godly attitude. I don't want people to believe that God would cuss, therefore, I don't cuss.

I don't care to hear people cuss, two I will call people down on. The "f" word and the taking of God's name in vain. When I lose it and say curse words, I pray for forgiven. I work hard at not using curse words but I slip. If I am wrong I will know it when I die but I am right.

Yes, because I am a born again Christian and I still have trouble with my mouth, when I get frustrated I swear.

It is something I'm embarrassed about, and have asked God to help me with.

They are sinful because the bible says not to join in any filthy talk. And I think those words are filthy. Ironic, I walked out of a play I flew all the way up to San Francisco to see, because of the filthy language. And yet I have been known to use that language too. I really dislike that about myself and pray to God that I can stop doing it!

Are you talking about a slip-up now and then or constant cussing? We are all human and we can cuss in a moment of anger or fear.

The reason we should not use these words as Christians is because we are supposed to be loving others and treating others as we want to be treated. Swearing to or around someone is not loving nor is it the way anyone wants to be treated. Think of the fruits of the Spirit--patience, love, generosity, kindness, humility, compassion, etc. Does any of that resemble swearing?

Ironically, I'm atheist and I never cuss.

Seeing as how A LOT of things are sinful in the Christian religion, then yes, cussing is sinful and would need to be repented.

These things are rude, and against society's rules. But let's not get society's rules mixed up with God's rules. It doesn't matter whether or not a person "cusses." He might or might not be a person of God. Only God can and does know that. We aren't supposed to be judging other people.
