Will judo be a workout for my skinny legs?, I don't do much leg exercises at the gym since I would need to work out to much to get them looking good.
Only when I was in soccer was I able to keep them in shape.

Is judo a good workout for the legs, because I had just joined, not for that purpose.

Wow, not to be disparaging but shouldn't some of you actually know something about Judo before going off at your mouth?

One week of dropping in for Ogoshi and Seionage and you will see just how leg central Judo is.

Judo will build your legs tremendously, as your base is a VERY key component to Judo.

I feel you will find out after about a week of class, when you quadracepts and hamstrings are so sore you can't walk.

Judo is VERY LITTLE upper body, it is mostly HIPS AND LEGS, with you having to use your legs to control your hips.

Forget sitting in Seiza, or spending hours in a horse stance, that doesn't build true dynamic fast twitch muscle.

Body resistant squats using your partner on your shoulders(done commonly in Judo practice) jumping in and dropping your weight below a guy by bending with your legs and not your back, and then launching yourself up with his weight and your weight in perfect balance, that builds muscle, and that is a large part of what Judo is about.

Judo will build very strong legs, and will be a great workout.

But honestly in a week or two I won't have to tell you that because you find out for yourself after enough Uchi Komi of major hip throws or Seionage.

Man.... some of you answerers..........

Good luck, Judo is awesome and fun. It is a great full body workout and addicting if it is your kind of thing. Best of luck with it!

Judo won't do much for your legs muscles since it concentrates on grabbing and throwing your opponent with your hands, despite the fact that legs play a key role in balance and execution. I would recommend Tae-Kwon-Do (I'm red belt currently) since it focus mostly on turning and side kicks. Advanced kicks including jump, spin, sliding, and skip kicks, are often used in that discipline. You need to do stretching excercises first if you are not flexible enough to perform the mentioned kicks.

Try Aikido, the seiza sitting position alone is a workout in itself. And I have yet to see a muscle bound guy do the Shikku a.k.a. the Samurai Ashi or more commonly referred to as the Duckwalk without breaking a sweat : P

Judo is good for all your muscles, but it won't give you big leg muscles.

Also work your wrists and grip with a rope dumbell pulley system. The above workout is good if you are intent on competition which most Judoka are.
