Most people are very familiar with at least the Siamese and Persian breeds and probably the Main Coon. These are the most popular breeds.

Many people who adopt a cat assume that it is a pure breed just because it looks like one they saw in a book or online, but actually it is most often a mixed breed.

There are breeds in certain countries that are almost unknown except in those countries For example:
Australian Mist

Anatolian:

There are also new breeds that are under development so are very rare such as the California Spangled, Munchkin, Nebelung, Selkirk Rex, Tiffany/Chantilly, York Chocolate, Chausie, Serengeti, Peterbald, Toyger.

What a pretty cat! Does it really matter what breed? I know know either what breed, but it appears to be a medium hair (not long) red tabby. She is probably a mixture of breeds over time. Actually mutts are healthier to have than pure breeds. Pure bred animals tend to harbor that particular breed's weaknesses more strongly than a mutt. Cross breeding helps to weaken not only strengths but also weaknesses....then again it also combines positive traits of multiple breeds. :-D I'd take a mutt any day over a pure breed.

The Cat Fancy central site will have all the RECOGNIZED breeds listed, but there are always new ones attempting to get enough backing to be listed. Some of the exotics don't qualify because they're too close to the wild breeds (outcrosses to European Wildcats, Sand cats, Margays, etc.).

The internet has lists, all you need to do is a search with google.com

I don't
I am a Vet Tech in Australia and as we do not get all the mixes that are now considered pure breeds in USA I do not see all the breeds of the world!
