All the above being said may or may not be right.

Why not talk to the recruiters of all the branches? Arabic speaking folk are in HIGH demand.

That doesn't make you qualified though, just to let you know.

You may or may not qualify for appropriate clearances, and my own 20 years in the translation biz tells me that just because someone speaks a language, even as a mother tongue, does not qualify them as a translator or interpretor

Just be forewarned about al that.

Anyway, if you are qualified and can get a clearance, there are also agencies such as NSA and FBI stateside who can use your help, so look into that as well.

If you don't' want to be deployed then military life is not for you, even people who join the reserves just for the college funding get deployed, don't ever think you are an exception. Especially as a translator, there is no need for translators in America except for the ones already here and none of them are nondeployable. I'm good friends with a translator who actually voluntarily goes to Iraq whenever he wants, he gets paid A LOT of money when he volunteers to do that but he also has his orders from his command that he has to abide by to deploy with the rest of his unit.

Then joining the Army is not for you. You don't get to set terms like that on enlisting.

There are jobs listed for translators all the time both for spoken translating and for translating written manuals. Start with Monster.com

If you go with the military you'll probably be happier being in the Air Force. People get treated better and generally speaking usually shorter deployments overseas. Secondly, you'll probably want to avoid military because speaking arabic will get ya in iraq or afghanistan easy.

you do NOT get to choose where you are deployed to or stationed at. If you are unwilling to go WHEREVER you are sent, then do NOT enlist. period.

If that means you get sent to GITMO, then off to Cuba you go.
