She has a luxating patella and no, there aren't any alternatives. Although slightly costly, is very easy to recover from and will be better for your pet in the long run.

Luxating patellas is a common condition.
If the dog can walk normally and is in no pain then I wouldn't get the surgery done.
Many dogs can live a good life with a grade 3 luxated patella.

Have the x-rays done on her and have a specialist orthopedic vet check the xrays out and grade them for you. I would wait to do xrays until she is a year old. Then she is fully grown.

Like I said if she is living normally and only has an occasional limp then I wouldn't really worry too much.

Talk to the vet about supplementing with msm or glucosamine. Do not give your puppy supplements unless your vet prescribes them for you.

For more information on luxated patellas visit orthopedic foundation for animals website.

There are probably thousands of dogs with a grade 1 or a grade 2 luxated patella and most do not experience that much of a problem and they do not get the surgery done.

My dog got diagnosed with luxating patellas at 8 months. She is not in any pain yet, so she does not require surgery. Surgery comes in, in some cases at stage 3, but mostly in stage 4. Your pup probably has low-grade luxating patellas, and won't require the surgery until after she starts to be in [ain from it. The vet prescribed a glucosamine supplement for my dog that she has to take for her entire life to help keep her knees healthy, ask your vet about it.

If she is getting around normally and is not in pain I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 9 year old Chi/Rat Terrier mix that started walking around on 3 legs a few weeks ago. I took him to the Vet. and he has luxating patellas. Never did he favor his right leg. The left one he still holds up sometimes. But when he is running with the other dogs it doesn't bother him at all.
