Take your time and ask lots of questions. If you know someone who knows about the workings of a car, ask them to tag along.
First car! Cool and who cares about the looks. Just as long as it's dependable - gets you there and back. You can 'update' later after a better job or something. I mean, everyone would like a super first car, but look around at what first car owners are driving. Are they happy?

There are some gems in between all those scams and pieces of crap. However, they are usually in bad condition or very old. Unless you will accept a older car like 1980s or maybe something older, you would probably end up spending the money for a decent, running used car. Just save up like 5000 or 6000 and get something decent.

Most likely, you will end up spending as much as you paid for the car or more in repairs shortly after you buy it. That's why it is for sale so cheap. I run a repair shop and see this almost everyday. You will be better off to pay $5000 or $6000 for a better, less worn out vehicle. It will be cheaper in the long run.

In that price category, they are either ugly but run fine or look good and run like crap. Sometimes you can find an older car that's just fine.

You can find a good car for that amount. Look up yahoo autos and put in your price and your area zip code. You can see what cars you can expect for that price.

Most of the time, yes.

However, if you dig a lot, you can find a gem in a lot of crap.

Watch for scams too!
