Foxe's Book of Martyrs are full of lies. Many of his supposed martyrs were fake and there are no documents what-so-ever of them. Actually, there was no crime against possessing and distributing English Bibles, prior to 1517, there was already an English Bible along with 3 copies of an Italian Bible and 2 copies of a German Bible. What was a crime was the Tynsdale Bible, which was full of errors and heretical teachings. It was actually condemned by the Church, but it was King Henry VIII who made it illegal to possess or distribute. It was he who had Tynsdale burned at the stake, not the Catholic Church. And actually, there was a book written against his book in 1824 called "A Critical & Historical Review of Fox's Book of Martyrs, Shewing the Inaccuracies, Falsehoods, & Misrepresentations in that Work of Deception" by William Eusebius Andrews. Unfortunately, it is out of print.

Excellent question! The papacy has been more tolerant because of the fact that in 1798 she lost her temporal power. She could no longer rule over the kings of the earth. Thanks to Napoleon who changed all that. In a way Napoleon was God's instrument to put a stop to the arrogance of the "little horn" of Daniel 7.
But prophecy tells us that before Jesus returns the papacy will regain her temporal power. Her wound will be healed! See Revelation 13:3,
That can only mean trouble. Persecution will raise its ugly head again against those who will refuse to pay her forced homage. But she will only reign for a very short time and will go down and be destroyed by those who once supported her!
p.s. and, as newman said, thanks to the Reformation, to men like Luther who, by preaching the word of God, made the triple crown in Rome tremble.

Because God raised up Martin Luther and many other reformist to speak truth against the insanity of the greedy hoard. Though many died at the hands of Catholic soldiers, these practices were slowly vanquished by the growth and popularity of the Reformation.

Don't you know history.?
Another infallible Pope arose and changed the rules. Happens all the time. Sometimes a Pope will even change his mind while in office.
Go figure.

The Church never did this because it would be a waste of fuel since they will burn for eternity anyway. The Church has always been frugal in this way.
