The "distance scale" is on the lens barrel and shows camera film plane or sensor plane to subject distance in feet and meters. Some film cameras actually had a mark on the top of the body to show where the film plane was so that a precise measurement could be made for critical focusing.. In the movie industry such measurements are still used.
