Both get hot but plasmas get hotter.
To extend their lives, don't mount in a hot area like over a fireplace or in direct sun. If you do mount over a fireplace, don't have a fire while the TV is on.
All other things being equal, plasmas have a better picture but LCDs are a better value.

'Hot' is an entirely incorrect word to use.
LCD screens generate very little heat.
Plasmas screens get warm (ONLY warm, not hot) around the vents at the back.
But neither plasmas or LCDs get anything like as warm as the old CRT televisions we had for decades, when nobody even asked the question!!

Both get hot but that is not a concern. The concern is that LCDs have a plastic matte screen and is very fragile. When it is broken it is finished and not warrantied.
