Chronic is another way of saying it keeps occurring, or is present all the time. Chronic depression means you have a pretty bad case, but as you know with depression it does wax and wain so you will have good days and not so good days.
Don't let this make you give up, as people can overcome depression and sometimes it takes a long time to find the Right combination of life style, therapy or medication.

Chronic means long term as opposed to a single event, like depression after a job loss or bereavement. Ive had it since I was 18 and now Im 52. ( But that is just a diagnosis, it doesnt mean your ill every day) However there are long periods where Im ok like now, and times when Im really unwell. Get any treatment going and read as many self help books as you can. Try and join a self help/support group. There is no one thing that helps everyone, so do as much as you can. Just to encourage you a bit - I once thought I would never get out of bed again, but since then Ive got my degree, raised 4 kids, and got a responsible job that ive now had for nearly six years without a days illness (well without a day off work!) It might take a long time to get your head around things, and to feel motivated about carrying on with your life. But I know lots of people who have done it, so its not impossible. Also learn as much as you can about the condition cos that helps you understand it. Good luck.

Chronic can be constant low level depression (dysthymia), ongoing depression, or recurring depression. A long time in terms of chronic means forever. Some people, however, experience a year or so of depression and can successfully ween off for good. The latter usually is situational. In any case, the best treatment is therapy and possibly meds.

I would think chronic in this case is not just length of time but the severity of the condition. My wife has had depression for about 20 years but it is controlled a lot of the time with drugs so there are times when she is quite happy .

Chronic means it has developed slowly, and needs to be treated... It does not mean forever, it is something that can be cured or lessened, but it does need treatment. In medical terms chronic means something that requires treatment.

Longer than you think, obviously! It doesn't go away but you can learn to cope with it and have an OK time. You got to be honest with the loved ones so they can understand and support you. Some of them can't cope themselves with it. They aren't necessarily bad just freaked.
