im irish and i want to go over for holiday in a few months

I think you can. you can open a washington mutual account online with no paper work, but I'm not sure if you need a US address. And all you have to do is get money in the account somehow with in 30 days, you might be able to transfer.

Why do you need a bank account while you're on holiday? Why don't you just get a credit card? You can also use your PIN card in the US, they can use theirs here .... did you know that? Check with your bank in Ireland to see what you can do with the means you have currently at your disposal - a bank account in the US might just be an unnecessary expense.

I'm not sure about a "bank" account per say, but I'm almost positive you could get yourself a paypal account, here's a Wikipedia article on it and I noticed that they have an office in Dublin:
