I have see unexploded cannon balls that must have been fired so why didn't they explode either on contact or from the force of being pushed out of the barrel?

Not all cannonballs were explosive; the vast majority were just hunks of iron being thrown at the target at high velocity. The few that were explosive had an explosive core, surrounded by the iron, with a fuse that led off into the wadding and packing where the explosion took place to fire the cannon. They were unreliable and there was little to no control over when they would exploded (i.e. in the air or long after they hit the target).
Explosives aren't as delicate as you are assuming. You can drive over a stick of dynamite and nothing will happen.

Lack of knowledge on your part. There were cannon balls which had internal fuses and a charge which caused them to explode after the fuse burned to the charge.

There is a time fuse inside the cannon ball that is light by the cannon firing. The time does not start until it is fired.

The ******* cannon balls had a remote controlled fuse. After the cannonball hit the target a UHF radio signal was sent to explode it. You people are such dumbasses.

Cannon balls were solid shot,no bang.
Shells went bang,had a fuse which was ignited by the explosion of the power charge.
