I'd like a family member to get a dog (I think it would be really good for him) but he says it wouldn't work in the Winter because he's on the second floor and won't want to always go outside to walk the dog. He likes the Chihuahua, and is wondering if the dog could do its duty on his balcony (perhaps in a 6x6 foot area on one end).

Is this possible or advisable? And would he use a litter box?

Thanks for your ideas.

Absolutely! Little dogs are great candidates for litter box training. There are all sorts of products out there now-a-days.
Personally I think this is a better option for little nippers. Their bladders are so small, they can have a hard time holding it for long periods.

If the dog is introduced to the doggy litter box right away, usually the small breeds will use it. One thing we did was to use newspaper or piddle pads in the box rather than litter. The litter was messy and our dog didn't like it.

Make certain the balcony is secured so the dog cannot fall or jump off of it. Even just chicken wire put up around the balcony will keep the dog on the balcony.

I have a chihuahua named Bella and she goes to the bathroom in a litter box. ( Preferably a dog litter box.) Petco and other stores sell dog litter boxxes so i would get one of those. Cat litter boxxes are just to small.

I don't think that is a good idea at all!!! Dogs need exercise at least twice a day, that means he would need to be walked that much! Most people think, because a dog is small, it doesn't need as much exercise as a bigger dog, but that's not true at all!!!! If your friend can not care for the dog properly then he shouldn't get one!!! He'll only make the dog miserable. Why doesn't he get a cat, that way it doesn't need to be walked and can use the litter box.

i haven't tried a litter box, but they do sell doggy litter boxes & special litter for dogs. My parents always trained their dogs to go in one corner of the yard, so I imagine it should be ok.

I am training my chihuahua on puppy pads. They really work! It's the modern equivalent of paper training. The pads are scented with a substance that makes the dogs want to go on them.

Doesn't sound like a good idea. Very dirty, and I am sure the neighbors won't be impressed. He would have to clean it up immediately, keep the area very clean. Why not get a cat?
