One of my friends where I attend church writes in her Bible, and I am not sure if it is respectful to the Bible to write in it or not.

The Bible is a book...It contains the word of God but it is not a God. She owns the book and can do as she likes with it.

I know someone whose Bible is simply covered with notes going back for decades. I find it disrespectful to write on any book, let alone the Bible, and and I have a further problem in that if you have notes on your Bible in relation to certain texts, then you surely get stuck in that rut, whereas if the pages are unmarked your mind is free to go along hitherto unexplored paths, as God guides you.

I write notes in my Bible all the time! It helps me learn. And its great to run across those notes again in church or when I'm reading. I do not think its disrespectful in the least!

Regards

The Bible was not a fax sent down from heaven, it has been edited and revised by man. Any book written by mankind is subject to the individuals ideas and inspiring words as questionable. Enlightened thinking involves the careful consideration of multiple points of view and keeping our minds open to alternative sources of information. Unless we work at becoming critical thinkers, there is a natural tendency is to limit our ideas to only those that are easily available, never really discovering or considering alternative sources of information. There is nothing disrespectful except judgment of another persons actions.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing in the bible. You have to understand..... it's just a book. You living your life by it is a totally different thing. It's like this...if God Himself ascended from heaven and your friend wrote on Him, then that would be disrespectful.

I agree with the rest here -- I find it really helpful to highlight and leave notes in my Bible.

Of course, if by writing you actually mean "take a marker and scribble across the pages..." Well, that might be another story. ;)

I highlight and write notes all throughout my Bible as a reference. I can go find important verses that I want to remember. To really study your Bible, I believe you have to make notes. When you study your school books don't you highlight and make notes too?

Well... if it is about the Bible and it's not critisizing, a.k.a. making fun of it, I see no reason why she can't do it. I understand ur thinking. The Bible is to be respected. If the notes help u come closer to God somehow, I believe it's ok.

It's not only right, it is a good thing. The Bible is a workbook. It's not some magical talisman that must remain inviolate. Don't worship the book, worship the Author.

Sure, It's been done for a long time..Many ancient Bibles have the notes of monks in them. It isn't a magic tome, God would probably be glad you are reading and studying it.

I highlight or write notes in the margins of a lot of my books to remind me of important points or as references. I would find it more disrespectful to merely carry around a book and not receive any useful knowledge from it.
