"f" stands for "f. stop" (please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_length). It expresses the diameter of the entrance pupil in terms of the effective focal length of the lens.

"mm" designates its focal length (in millimeter). Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_lens

The depth of field is another subject you should read--it's related to the aperture (see f stop above).

It's quite a reading assignment for you. But this is basic photography and I made myself learn it years ago when I started using Nikon FM2 (which is a completely manual camera--the user sets everything him / herself.)

The mm is the focal length.
The other numbers like f2.8 for instance is the aperature.

The focal length is in a camera lens is how close it can bring the subject to you. I am not sure how to explain this.

The aperature refers to how "open" a lens can get. The lower the number means it will open up more to allow more light in.

You took a class? And were "Photographer of the Year"? And you don't know about focal lengths? Or f-stops? Was this a class at Wal-Mart or one you found on a matchbook? Fairly amazing!

"mm" is MilliMeters and expresses the focal length of a lens. 24mm is a short focal length, 300mm is a long focal length. A lens with 28-200mm is a zoom.

f1.4 or f2 or f2.8 or f4 or f5.6 or f8 or f11 or f16 is the size of the opening in the diaphragm inside the lens. f1.4 is very large; f16 is very small.
