The first heart-lung domino transplant was done at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. It was done by the hospital's team headed by Bill Baumgartner (Johns Hopkins Hospital's cardiac surgeon-in-charge) and his best friend Bruce Reitz (a fellow Stanford resident).

Clinton House who is the first living heart donor in the U.S., had his lungs damaged by cystic fibrosis. A multiple-organ heart and lung combination transplant from an auto accident victim was given to him in a 17-hour operation. It was believed that transplanting both the heart and lungs would be a better option and safer because there were more problems with lungs-only transplants.

House healthy heart was transplanted to a second recipient, John Couch at the same hospital. House survived 14 months with his new lungs and heart however the transplanted organs were later rejected and he died on 11 Jul 1988.
