Crikey! Some interesting answers so far!!

It's a good question, as it opens a bit of a window on the strange mind that is the "believer"! LOL
Whilst I think it's nice that people can listen to their own inner monologue (or dialogue if they're dual personality I guess!) saying nice things and believe that's god reaching out to them, I worry that there's also people out there who can hear that same inner monologue telling them bad things....and thinking that it's god...... and so they go ahead and do bad things because of that divine permission. Kind of gives people free rein to do what they want. (Lucky most of the respondants so far seem to be nice people anyway.....although I'm sure that won't save me from some serious thumbs down action!)
I'm glad that so many people do good deeds etc because of their faith that they are communicating with god, based as it is on such monumental proof as "a gentle voice somewhere in my head", but I much prefer to use my inner monologue for the less grand function of thinking before I speak. LOL

When I pray, and ask the Lord to give me an answer,He speaks to me as a small voice in my head. It's nothing out loud, that other people can hear. It's like when you're not saying anything aloud, but you have thoughts going through your head.
The secret is to know when it's God talking,to have discernment, because other things could be trying to influence you, even yourself.
I'll tell you what recently happened to me.
I was having a very hard time,on stress leave from work. I was praying about finding another job,and not getting one. As I was praying about it,I was reminded of a verse in the Bible that says"....they that wait unpon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall rise up on wings as eagles....." That was the Lord speaking to me.
So, I was thinking about what does it really mean to "wait upon the Lord"? Finally,I asked Him,and got a 2 word answer;"My child". I then asked what that was supposed to mean, and He asked me "what does a child do to support itself?" I realized that as children,we don't do anything to earn our food, and lodgings,we are totally dependant on our parents to supply all our needs, like food, shelter and clothing.
So what I need to do is to trust Him to do the same for me.
I'm still at the same stressful job,but am depending on my Lord to give me the strength I need to do it, and He'll make sure that I have everything else I need to survive.
Hope this answers your question

Aren't you "speaking" to me right now? I have no idea what your voice sounds like. Or do you think the only way of communicating is by audible sound. So, I guess deaf people can't communicate? If you have a legit question, I'll give a legit answer, God communicates through the Bible, through other people, through the church, and through circumstances. Those of us who know him recognize when a communication comes from God.

His voice sounds differently to different people. God usually sounds like a familiar and comforting voice. You may have thought you heard a parent or friend calling your name only to find out that nobody has said a word. That is often God calling your name but it sounds like a voice we would recognize as someone else's.

Mostly it would sound like one's own voice, quiet in your mind. You take time to learn when it's Him and when it's you, probably making mistakes along the way.
Sometimes God speaks through scripture, sometimes in dreams, visions, pictures, and often through things other people say to you. It needs a discerning mind to know when those times are, I expect I miss much of what God says to me because I am too impatient to wait and hear him.

God speaks through many ways like The Bible and Dreams.

I don't know how His voice sounds like. I will when I see Him. But I do know He has spoken to me. Through the Bible.

I read something in the Bible and I think it's cool, I find the verse again somewhere else. And then someone else talks about it.

He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet, that the birds stop their sinning.

When one is first born again, it is because they received faith from God. Faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Faith to confess Jesus Christ Lord of their life & believe in their heart He raised from the dead.

And Jesus saves us from our sins. The old sinful man dies, sins washed away & the new man in Christ alive forevermore.

Thenwe still have a perishable body with sin nature. We are whole; body, soul & spirit. But body still has some stinking thinking in it. So? We are to renew our mind in the Word of God. The truth sets us free. It is lies we believe that keep us in bondage & why we sin. So? When we renew our mind in Gods Word, the Holy Spirit brings scripture to mind when we need it. Either a word to tell someone else or to tell us the correct thing when we are thinking wrong. So? A scripture that comes to mind of what the Lord speaks to us. This is a still quiet voice that the Holy Spirit speaks to our new born spiritman. Then we need to make the soul decision to follow after the Spirit. The Holy Spirit wont force us, we have to decide to.

To die to the lust of the flesh (not react by yelling cussing, etc.) & to choose to follow after the Spirit (faith, hope, love, joy, peace, patience, etc.)

Now the Holy Spirit also gives gifts o the Spirit. And the bible explains these gifts. And they are sometimes a word of wisdom, understanding or knowledge. And when I have prayed for Israel in the past. The Lord somehow just gave me understanding how God would heal Israel & what Israel also needed to do. It is written that when we ask for wisdom without doubting or wishy washy, that God gives wisdom liberally. That is the how to draw a picture or design a home suddenly. What is the specific request asked in faith. And also there is the gift of speaking other languages or prophesying or interpreting a different language. And these are gifts to praise God & to pray for others or to give a word to others form God. And These are received by the laying on of hands by another Christian at first. After receiving the gift, the gift is with you forever. And with the prophetic gift comes dreams & vision. So? Then you ask God what the dream or vision means. And someone can confirm the meaning or explain it to you in Christ. God speaks to us through others also.

So? God speaks to us differently. God speaks at first through an anointed person of God preaching the Gospel. The Pastor preaches & God speaks to the congregation individually. Faith comes by hearing & hearing a Word about Christ / God.

When we pray to God, we need to listen. God answers & sometimes you can hear the voice of God. As Prophets heard the voice of God in the bible. Jesus even sounded like a trumpet in there. Or a still small voice. Or speaking the 10 commandments that scared everyone listening.

So? I hear Gods voice. I also hear God all these other ways. Or in a vision.

For example, once I was in praise & worship after I had shared my testimony with others even though I had an anxiety attack doing so. I said my whole testimony. Then later at the praise & worship, I saw a vision of Jesus putting a crown on my head & heard, "I give you a crown of courage for saying this to so & so...". So? I saw & heard it with my spiritual eyes & ears and not my physical eyes & ears.

Also, how a person hears from God differs & depending on how they are listening or maturing in Christ. It starts out by hearing the Word of God preached. God speaks louder to baby Christians I have heard others say. & God spoke loudly to me when I first came back to Christ. But then. I have learned to grow in faith to llisten to God & hear him. Submit to God, give God attention, pray, listen to His Word, read the bible; resist satan & satan flees.
