Hi im sure a Ball is English and was an event that took place for the royles years ago and now the working class have them.
It is a very fancy event where you have to dress up in a ball gown or a tucks you would normally take part in ball room dancing ,im not sure of the name of the dances.
People used to have them for princes and all the woman who wanted a chance to meet the prince would go, have to dress up and if they were lucky the prince would choose them to dance with .
It was like a courtship ritual.
Now balls are quite commen but its normally the middle class that have them(i may be wrong about the class thing). It is now popular to have them as a charity event where people raise money for local charitys, normaly the mare and mareess get an invite to dine and dance.I think speeches are sometimes made.
A dance is an american highschool event which happens at the end of the school year im sure you would of seen plenty of them on american films. They are very common and happen every year. Its more likley you would go to one if you are asked by a date.It is tradition for the girls to wear a dress but nowadays i think they would where what is in fashion at the time, they would dance to a band or a dj get drunk without anyone knowing and i think most of them like to think they would end up with a bit of nook(my polite way of putting it)at the end of the night. All a bit like a school disco(depending on what school you went to)
i hope this was some help for you

A ball is a very formal affair.

A dance can cover anything from a sock hop to an informal dinner dance or prom.

A ball is a formal affair; a dance could be anything but usually it's casual.

A ball has more formal attire, sometimes requiring gowns and black ties. While a dance is a little less informal, depending on how the host arranges the theme.

now days people are getting dressed up to go to the local corner shop - if you want to stick to tradition the prom/ball gown is usually as it states, a gown, something long and beautiful. the spring dance dress should be something more relaxed, more cocktail like and usually knee length
