Art is a little too personal of a choice. I would suggest a gift basket. Wine Country Gift Baskets is online and offers lots of choices with and without wine. He might like the BBQ basket or the Breakfast in Bed. There are baskets priced from $20 to $300.

Sounds like you answered your own question. Art is expensive, but you also have to be a real good judge of his tastes, why not send tickets to an event he enjoy. I'm not judge of how much sporting events go for, but concert events are moderate in price, and there are some events that held that are free, just send invite on the card, and treat him to lunch or dinner.
