No. Religion is an ancient form of story-telling that turned into answers for deep unanswerable questions, which turned into a form of mind control, which turned into a self-perpetuating device for people to make themselves slaves to ideas.

Define Mind Control.

Some postmodernist suggest that our acceptance of any economic system (Capitalism/Communism for instance) and the propaganda that goes along with it is a form of mind control.

Philosophers and Psychologists point to the rather "closed" nature of certain political ideologies and the propagandic techniques use to spread them as forms of influence/mind control.

Heck, at the extreme, some folks believe in the "Manufactured Consent" idea brought up by Noam Chomsky - that in effect, the Media practices a form of "soft" mind control by setting the agenda of what is considered to be "news worthy" and repeating their opinions again and again and again until the public starts to parrot it.

Most religions started with some inspired Teacher just trying to impart a few 'Truths' to his or her fellow human beings. The problems is that those 'Teachings' get distorted by subsequent accolytes, usually called 'priests' or priestesses, in order to control the masses and get what they want out of the deal, the Avondrow had it pretty much on the nail, with his/her ( sorry, gender not known ) 10,000 bce scenario..

Oh, and by the way, it isn't just the minds that have been controlled, the bodies have been manipulated quite a bit too.

Agreed, motivation by employing concern has been an effectual societal administration, in spite of if that's a chest beating neanderthal alpha or a thick e book of scripture. Your question presupposes the idea that keeping one's mind under control is a bad thing. Christ said that "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind". Notice that he included the mind. A person who's mind is under control will be focused on God all the time, and will not be thinking of lust, thievery, or lies. If the world were entirely populated with such people can you imagine how wonderful it would be? Pax et caritas.

No one controls your mind except that you allow them to do that. You are free to think for yourself. Never forget that.
