Just because your cat stays active doesn't mean she's 100% healthy. Cats are very private about their illness when they get sick. A cat can be in excruciating pain, but she'll pretend to be just fine. (I've read some articles that suggest this might be a way for them to protect themselves since other animals often dominate sick or weak animals.) The only sure sign that a cat is truly sick is when they go off to hide by themselves. By this time it may be too late.

If your cat is loosing fur, it could be any number of skin problems, allergies (cat's get them too!) or even anxiety...

Is she an indoor cat? Both in and outdoor? Is it just the soft fur that's coming out, or is it both the fur and the hair that she's loosing? How old is she? Has something in her environment changed recently? (New food? New home? Are you using a new kind of cleaning product around the house?) Is the skin on her legs red? If she's an outdoor cat, she might have walked through someone's lawn after they sprayed it with chemicals.

These are all the questions the vet will ask you. A vet visit will probably cost you about $100 depending on what turns out to be wrong with your cat. Sure that's a lot of money, but in the end well worth it.

My cat did the same thing: her backside and back legs looked awful; she, too, was excessively grooming herself. My vet said it was probably a flea allergy, gave kitty an injection and a dose of Frontline.

Hi Daizy,

Sounds like your cat is grooming excessively. This can happen because she's itchy due to fleas or she has anxiety.

Could be allergies. You should probably take your cat to a vet.
