If you get a 60 or 80 gigabyte PS3, you'll be just fine. The lesser models have decreased functionality along with decreased storage. The updates can be downloaded to any version PS3. I got my console a month after launch and its as updated as any.
Plus, the dope games are coming out this year! You better hurry up before Ratchet and Clank, Haze, and Uncharted comes out.

Is it worth it to buy one right now, many will say no wait until the price drop, etc.... Here's the facts on the PS3, the PS3 60GB is the last version to have included hardware backward compatibility. All subsequent versions of the PS3, including the 80GB version use software emulation. There are games that work on the 60GB version that has troubles running on the 80GB version.
Now as far as the updates go, yes they've release a ton of firmware upgrades, but most of these upgrades are to functions and for functions, not updates or upgrades to the functioning of the machine.

The new and improved versions are through firmware updates to the system, and apply equally to any PS3.
Some of the later models have actually had some features cut back (PS2 compatibility, flash memory card slots for the new 40GB model have gone to cut costs).
The actual core of the system will not change (how could anyone develop games for it, if Sony were to change the spec.s on a whim)
There are rumours they may use a slightly faster hard-drive at some point, but you can swap them out yourself if you like.

Figure out what your reason is for getting a PS3. Is there some game you want to play right now? Is it for the Blu-Ray? Would you die if you didn't wait until march of 2008?
I for one don't see enough reason to buy one (I assume you already have a xbox 360?) if not get that first, (halo 3 edition) and see if that well hold you over.

I would say that if you have waited this long, you might as well wait until either they have fixed all the bugs and have a single packet download fix, wait for the new and improved version, or even wait to see if they make an announcement of a varied version of the PS3 or the PS4.

I don't think that a PS3 is worth it now. I would wait until the price gets cheaper.

It's better to get 60GB (NTSC) version now, it has Emotion Engine chip for backwards compatibility with PS2 games. 80 GB doesn't have it, it runs PS2 games on software emulation. 40GB version won't run PS2 games at all.
