My dog just had her ears clipped and she is turning out to be the master of tearing the bandages off. She has one of those cone things over her head but she is still managing to get her ears undone. We have taken her to get them redone 3 times so far and they charge $30 everytime and she still has to have them on for a little over a week. I can't afford to keep taking her back to the vet. I keep her in a kennel and give her bones and smear peanut butter all over her toys to keep her distacted but its not working. I want to know if anyone can suggest some good medical tape/ medical glue and some more things to distract her. And is it such a big deal if I start taping them back myself??? No rude answers plz...Thanks

Soem vets will wrap the ears like a mummy afterwards and it bugs the hell out of the dog. My vet puts styrofoam cups on the pups heads and the ears are taped to it with teh stiches area exposed to heal. It works fantastic and the this way they can scab over and heal and you can see them too which relieves you that no infection is festering under there. I'm sure you can find pictures online somewhere of how the cup method is done. You need 2 small stryofoam coffee cups. 1 inch sport tape, and skin bond glue bought from medical stores.. like Alick Home Medical.. places like that..
You tape the cups together then put a piece of tape sticky side out up and over the top of the cup. Brush a little glue on there and the ear and stick the ear to the cup and then tape the part of the ear that doesn't have stitches to the cup.. Its hard to explain but if you need help and want to try it... I would call your local kennel club and ask them if they have people experienced with this and tell them you are looking for help. This would be MUCH better then what the vet is doing and someone would show you how to do this and not charge you.
I will try to find a link online for this method...

Use skinbond glue to keep the posts in the ears. Use 3M Transpore tape to tape the ears. You SHOULD be able to tape the ears yourself. How come your breeder didn't get the ears cropped for you? How come the breeder won't teach you how to tape ears? How come you are here asking, rather than asking your breeder?
Do you watch the vet when he tapes the ears? Tape them like he does. It's EASY to do.. Didn't anyone warn you about the taping process before you went ahead and had this done? You could be taping for months and months and months.. Don't give up, you'll never get them to stand if you don't keep them taped... Keep the ears clean.
Edit : That is absolutely NOT true.. Cropped ears NEED to be taped.. If you do not tape them, they will NEVER stand.. That is a ridiculous statement made by someone who has no ear experience.
You do not need to sedate your dog to go thru the eartaping.. If you tape the ears correctly, it's not even a problem for the dog.. OMG.. I can't believe the misinformation here on ears.

I've had many dogs ears cropped & never did I use the e-collar. I also never had any problems with the dogs removing the taping.
I would suggest trying to have the ears taped & eliminate the cone. Maybe that is what she is trying to get rid of.
This may help a little http://dobermanclub.org/Buying_Puppy/ears.html
Good luck!!!

If you want them to heal correctly I would not try to retape them yourself. Maybe bring the dog back into the vet one last time and ask how or if you could tape them yourself the vet will probably be able to sell you supplies you will need if they say taping them yourself is ok. You wouldn't want your dogs ears to look funny because you taped them yourself so it's better to be safe than sorry!

I sent you an email regarding posting/taping. I hope it'll help. The first time can be a pain, but after that, it's not that bad. You do need a 2nd pair of hands though.

I had the same issue with my Doberman Pincher and the only way I could find relief was to use a seditive. The seditive only cost about $15 for 10 of them, and each one lasts most of the day.
Call your vet and ask for this. It will help you and more importantly it will keep the dog calm and relaxed and won't tear off the dressing and/or become infected.
I used a small dose just to keep her calm. You will only have to do this for a few days to allow the ears to begin to heal. If she keeps breaking the scabs open, they will not heal properly.
Best of luck.

i do no longer think of it is going to be banned. it is not a merciless technique.. I even have quite a few Dobermans who're cropped. i stumble on that the cropped ears are not as possibly to have problems as a results of fact the closed organic ear. I even have faith that if we enable them to take our rights away slowly, one morning we are able to awaken and function unquestionably no rights in any respect.. i'm a specialist decision guy or woman.. except it rather is severe and hazardous then i desire to have the flexibility to compliment on my own whether i desire to have it accomplished. the folk who're set against it have no theory what the entire ingredient involves. people have a tendency to leap on the bandwagon and are Anti each and every little thing, whether or no longer they additionally be attentive to what it rather is they are in contrast week. They banned the pit bull right here.. yet you be attentive to what.. somebody have been given caught with a 9 month previous pit bull in basic terms final week.. I even have additionally met people who're breeding pit bulls.. The ban did no longer something, different than people to reproduce underground, and make it impossible to have the flexibility to offer proper vet look after their canines. If regulations might desire to be put in place, it is going to be against people who leave their canines outdoors to fend for themselves, people who enable their 6 month previous mutt to get pregnant. people who ignore their puppy and refuse them vet care reason they have no money. the folk who permit their canines roam and wander impregnanting each and every dogs on the line.. people who purchase pets and then unload them on the shield reason they did no longer come totally skilled.. people feeding rubbish dogs ingredients reason they are an extreme quantity of less costly to feed their pets nicely, then dumping them whilst they get sick and want care.. There are much extra issues incorrect contained in the international than a vet precise cropping ears. provide up the folk who abuse and ignore their pets first.. as quickly as you get that accomplished.. possibly you are able to artwork on the smaller issues..

Try an E-Collar
A correctly cropped ear should not need to be taped in order to stand. If the ears are not standing after crop due to cartilage weakness or incorrect crop, you can buy moleskin or Dr. Scholl's footpad at your local drug store, cut it in the shape of the ear, glue with skin bond to inside of ear for support.

try getting her a roll and treat. a ball that when the dog rolls it gives treats. you can easily make one too. or try a cone around her head, the ones they use when they dont want the dog to lick.
