They were taken up into heaven by the angel Moroni. Very similar to how Jesus was taken up. However, there are many who witnessed them, and their witness can be found in the preface to the Book of Mormon.

Many Latter Day Saints, including Brigham Young, have believed the plates were returned to Hill Cumorah and that other ancient records lie buried there, including the Sword of Laban and the Urim and Thummim given to aid the translation process

Once the translation was finished, he was instructed to return them to Moroni...the same being that had led him to them in the first place.
Nope, they're not in a museum....however you can get a copy of what they said delivered to your home for free.

Nobody ever saw the plates but Joseph Smith. He told everybody else that if they looked at them, they would die.
Later, three people asked about them and Smith took them out to the woods to see the plates. Of those, only one admitted not seeing the plates.
So, the plates with a funky Egyptian language disappeared from the face of the planet and Joseph Smith continued to be a false prophet.

Some of the plates were sealed for future use. They were returned to Moroni.

Here is a quote from Joesph Smith from his testimony that is in the introduction to the Book of Mormon.
I soon found out the reason why I had received such strict charges to keep them safe, and why it was that the messenger had said that when I had done what was required at my hand, he would call for them. For no sooner was it known that I had them, than the most strenuous exertions were used to get them from me. Every stratagem that could be invented was resorted to for that purpose. The persecution became more bitter and severe than before, and multitudes were on the alert continually to get them from me if possible. But by the wisdom of God, they remained safe in my hands, until I had accomplished by them what was required at my hand. When, according to arrangements, the messenger called for them, I delivered them up to him; and he has them in his charge until this day, being the second day of May, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight

No.Like all the really important pieces of proof that would conclusively prove an event from a religious tale such as the ark of the covenant, such items are no longer attainable. They have vanished. hmmm... lol

They are supposedly lost, though they were supposedly found for a little while there, then those were shown to be hoaxes.
Much like the Salamander Letter.
