I've been looking at number of different websites but keep on getting different height info. Is it up to the manufacturer to decide on the measurements or there is some sort of industry standard?

The counter stool is ranging from 24 to 26 inches.
Bar stool is a bit higher and goes from 29 to 31 inch.
There are also adjustable stools and the height deviation is from 26 to 33 inches.

Counter stools are 24 inches; bar stools 29/30. Whatever the height of your space will determine which size stool you will need to buy. For instance kitchen islands are typically counter heighth.

Dawnb has the right answer. If your table is 40" from the floor or higher, then you'll need a "bar stool." If your table is 34" - 36" from the floor, then you need a "counter stool."
