By refusing an occasional reasonable request for a visit you are breaking the law. This is true whether or not the father is obliged to pay maintenance and it is true whether or not his maintenance payments are in arrears. Maintenance is not compensation for shared custody or visits.

From what you are saying, I don't think a lawyer is going to help. You need to grow up and stop throwing your toys out of the pram. Your son's father has rights as well as duties and you should respect his rights. It is in your son's best interests to see his father even if you don't like him.

Getting on to the subject of free legal advice, anyone in Britain is entitled to half an hour's legal advice from any lawyer who is a member of the Legal Aid Scheme. Where I live the law department of the local university will also give legal advice at no charge. Usually you get to see a professor of law and one or two students.

Depending on your income, you may qualify for free legal assistance through Legal Services Corporation. Check to see if you can find such a listing in your local phone book. If it does not appear under this name, than look under Legal Aid.

The federal government gives a grant so that people of very little income can obtain some legal assistance. I'll warn you though that even if you can find this in your area and you qualify that you may not get first class service. They will probably do very rudimentary work, but that is about it.
