Have you also noticed that a lot of guys have a variation of that, in that they put their ankle of one leg on the knee of the other? I've seen men cross their legs like a girl, but it can't seriously be that comfortable.
I don't know why people cross their legs. I can't cross my legs like a girl - it hurts and squeezes me where I don't need to be squeezed. However, I HATE the feeling of the ankle on the knee, too. So, I just sit in whatever style I can comfortably sit.

It's actually bad for you in terms of circulation etc. in your legs. In terms of etiquette, some experts even believe that it is bad manners.
Another way to sit that is just as comfortable is to cross your feet just at your ankles when you are sitting.

I find crossing my legs to be more comfortable for my hips and lower back.

Sometimes, I do it......mostly instinctively. It can get uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time with my legs in one position, so I move them around.

I realized that when I keep my legs crossed for a while it hurts my inner thighs.

It's really just habit for me. I normally don't even realize I'm doing it until my leg starts going to sleep!

It's not that it is more comfortable, it's a matter of a less than comfortable position or chair.
