There is good reason to believe there will be a $399.99 PS3, which will be identical to the one recently announced in Europe.
This PS3 will come with a 40GB hard drive, fewer USB ports, no card reader, and NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY WHATSOEVER.
Yes, that's right, this will be a PS3 that is COMPLETELY unable to play PS2 games. So, while it is cheaper, it also has less hardware and fewer functions.
If PS2 games are still important to you, either buy the 60GB PS3 for maximum backwards compatibility. The 80GB only has an emulator which isn't nearly as good as the true PS2 hardware the 60GB PS3 contains. Or, just put off buying a PS3 altogether. Seriously, if you're still playing PS2 games, there's not going to be a whole lot on the PS3 to keep you busy.

there are rumors of a 40 gb PS3 coming stateside, especially after one was announced in Europe. It only has 2 usb ports and no memory card slots. the only thing that bothers me about it is that people belive that is has no backwards compatability. IT HAS BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY. The previous PS3 models have relied on hardware for backwards compatability, but this one relies completely on software. As part of cost reduction, they have phased out models using hardware, with the 40 gig being the only one to rely completely on emulation software. Right now it is fully compatabile with PS1 games via emulation, but no PS2 games. In the future, there will be emulation software to play PS2 games, but that is still under development and is only going to be available some time down the road via a firmware update.

Nope. Unless Sony plans to lose a lot of money. I heard that Sony spent a lot of money on the PS3, and if they lower the price it would be good news for the consumers, but I don't see how Sony is gonna benefit from this.
