Yes, it grows all around the tree.
However, it doesn't like direct sunlight so it grows MORE on the northern side in the norther hemisphere because the sun is closer to the equator on the south side, so there is more direct sunlight there..
That means if you were in some location below the equator the moss would grow more on the southern side, because the northern side would be closer to the equator and have more direct sunlight.
The navigation guide you are referring to should state; "If you can't see the sun and are lost in a forest, in the northern hemisphere, check the trees and the side with the most moss on them will be the northern side, but make sure to check several trees." A bit too long to remember easily, but that's the real meaning of the saying.
Oh, and in case if you wonder if moss doesn't grow on a rolling stone; it can. Provided you keep it in a milk and moss growth solution revolving in a drum that is not in direct sunlight; as seen on the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters.

Moss grows on all sides of the tree. However for purposes remember moss grows faster in dark places. In the Northern Hemisphere the Sun is always to the south. Therefore the Northern side of the tree gets the least sun and the moss grows highest there. In The Southern Hemisphere, Australia for example the opposite is true.

Yes. Moss will grow under the right conditions. As a general rule of thumb, explorers used to use this to help get a sense of general navigation direction... BUT, what about if the north side of the tree in question is shaded by another tree? Moss doesn't know direction, nor does it care. If there's a nice damp dark area for it to grow, it will grow. :-)

Only in some areas of the world. In TX it grows all oer the tree, but in Scotland, moss is found on the north side. Hope this helps.

yes because moisture is retained more on that side but it can grow on any side if the conditions are right
