Contrary to what some of the answers here have said THERE IS NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE THAT SCHIZOPHRENIA IS INHERITED! Some believe there is an inherited predisposition to getting it but I doubt it. Schizophrenia is not a single disorder but a spectrum of disorders. SO STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT and take steps to raise your children in a family atmosphere of Tender Loving Care (TLC), which will prevent a whole lot of trouble for them.
Good luck, good mental health, peace and love!

I have always thought that people should steer clear of not only any drugs but specifically, psychodelic drugs that cause hallucinations such as LSD (acid), PCP (angel dust), 'magic' mushroom, ecstasy (which is part hallucinogen and part stimulant) and mescaline/peyote cactus. They can most likely bring on schizophrenia in those withOut a family history of the mental illness let alone a genetic predisposition.

Schizophrenia as you know is inherited. Actual manifestation, however, is thought to often (but maybe not always) be due to a traumatic or stressful event in a child's life. The best step towards prevention is to try to minimize stress in your childs young life and teach her stress coping skills. Don't make a big deal about it (fear of schiz or stress skills). Odds are that she won't have it.

Is marrying within your family common where you are from?
Read up on schizophrenia so you can better understand it. It typically strikes men in their late teens or early 20's after an upset in their life.

i agree that many illegal drugs can cause someone to go on and develop schizophrenia, and if it is in your family there is a greater chance of getting it. it usually begins as the person begins adulthood. it should be noted however that every one has a chance to develop this illness. what you can do is to educate your children about the use of drugs and this possibility, and get your kids to make a power of attorney when they are old enough. i helped bring to law the Ulysses contract in power of attorneys and have one for myself as i have this disease and this allows my wife to have me treated against my will when i am suffering the effects of schizophrenia. relapse is usually influenced by stress, especially stress that i can not resolve. establish trust and this is usually carried forward. for many with schizophrenia there are very good medications, you may have to try a number of them to find what works best. symptoms may not always be present. for me written communication is very effective, verbal communication is affected by hallucinations at times, but my values remain in tact for the most part. you can not usually talk someone out of their delusions. be sensitive to side effects as they can lead to non-compliance. have meds packaged in blister packages to help keep track of taking them as prescribed. a healthy upbringing with good socializing skills is very important and get help form a society that helps one cope. we can still be very productive in spite of this major set back. read about it, the biggest obstacle is stigma. good luck and god bless

Not much you can do except get treatment in the early stages. Think about not having kids if it concerns you so much and runs in your family.
