When I read the title question the first thing that hit my mind was "get her a cardboard box" because seriously kids at that age love the box more than the gift inside. If you want to get her a keepsake I'd wait on the locket. It's kind odd to give someone a gift that is neither safe for them to touch for fear of breaking it or a choking hazzard and that will be wisked away not to be seen until she's 6. You might as well wait on that. If I only had 1 child and it was their first birthday, and I had all the knowledge I have now, I would get her picture taken wearing a gorgeous obnoxiously expensive dress and have it made on canvas and put in a really special frame and hung in the living room. That would be something she would be able to see all her life and when she's grown up she might even appreciate it!

I think the locket is a great idea with a photo of you and her in it and then save it until she's older and then she can look back at the photos of when she turned one...I love sentimental things. They are so special and meaningful cuz the clothes they grow out of so fast and the toys, they play with for a week and then it gets kicked under the bed and not played with anymore. So go for the locket...and then give it to her on a special day like when she promotes from elementary school to middle school or when she hit puberty or on her 13th birthday. :)

Collectible dolls are nice. I still have the ones my aunt purchased for me when I was very young. I didn't appreciate them as much at the time, but now that I am older I treasure them.
Any sort of porcelain or ceramic keepsake would be good, too.
You can start a tradition for her. A friend of mine had figurines of ladies in ballgowns with numbers 1 thru 16 which were given to her on each birthday.

Since she doesn't know or care what you get her...if I had a niece or daughter I would have gotten her this...a charm bracelet that I hold on to, putting on a new charm each birthday and for a few special occasions as well. Then I would give it to her on her 18th B-day.
For this b-day you could put the #1. Each year you can get a new charm that represents the stage she's in at that time.
Or you could start a collection of some sort that you get one of each year.

thats a great idea, as far as the locket or a bracelet, just so she can have when shes all grown up. although considering shes only one, it might get lost or break or something, cuz shes prob an active child. why not get her something more educational. seeing that you posted this question, im assuming you want to get her something worthwhile. save the extra special gift (whatever you decide has sentimental value) for when shes a bit older...OR you can give it to her right now, take a special pic of both of you, but save it and give it to her when shes older! hope this helps!

Why not start a charm bracelet for her ? Get a 1 st birthday charm and add on her milestones ! Or an add a pearl necklace that she can wear as a teen ? Good luck

if she already has everything she needs I dont know.....

maybe you should get some special mother-daughter portraits, she may not know much about it now but as she gets older it will be a cherishable memmory for the two of you...

just a thought
