Anyone who swims in my local river (or falls in drunk as the more common case may be) ends up severly ill with muscle and stomach cramps ,spazumz, high fevers, and violent vomiting...goodness knows whats in that water i think the swans and ducks must carry some kind of injection :S

I avoid it for good reason around here.

When I first moved to this area I joined a local community sailing club to get as place to socialize. On my first trip on the Charles River the instructor ran the boat aground trying to get back to the dock (she had just qualified as an instructor). I had to step off into the water and then help get the boat going again. I looked down at my new white sneakers and they had turned the color of dark tea in those few minutes. That convinced me to never go swimming in that river and to pick sailing instructors based on their skills not their appearance.

Here in Georgia and Florida swimming in rivers is great acceptable pleasure. The port areas and downtown parts of the rivers are polluted.

If you are asking about swimming in a river on Yom Kippur, you aren't supposed to bathe or swim on Yom Kippur. If you are asking about swimming in a river in general...it would depend on the location of the river, the ecological stability (or lack of) of the area.

Unless you're feeling kinda sucidial, I would avoid doing such a foolish thing. Rivers have powerful underwater currents which can pull you under. I myself once fell in a river whilst on a boating trip, and very nearly drowned!

O'Connor, you dork! How did people manage before the Municipal Baths. Of course you can swim in a bl**dy river, just watch out for the floating brown jobs.

Interesting Section in which to choose to post your question!
Is this a new requirement that you immerse yourself in water as well as fast?!
I definitely avoid swimming in a river - if I did it would be because I'd fallen over the side of my boat. I'm also wary of leptospirosis.

I used to when I was a kid growing up in the country. However, here in town, no way. We're told not to eat the fish from the rivers around here. Ack.

It's a shame that people have come to accept pollution as routine.

I'm a little confused as to what this question might have to do with Yom Kippur, other than casting one's sins into a river (which doesn't seem to have been the thrust of your question). Perhaps you should try again, so you don't get reported?
