When you go to college, you have these options:
Software Engr (computer programmer) aka CS
Electrical Engineer aka EE
Electrical and Computer Engineer aka ECE
Chemical Engineer aka Chem E
Mechanical Engineer aka ME
Civil Engineer -- designs public works, maybe military systems as well
If you want to design computer devices and hardware, the route is ECE.
Does it pay well? Around 55000-65000.
You will have to take a ton of pretty tough Math, physics, and electrical engineering classes in college. Recognize this is a serious commitment.
You also have to worry about outsourced jobs to some extent. Because people from India will take a salary 1/4 of this and be content with it.
To start, you can learn the difference between an electrical device and an electronic device. Electrical concerns only those devices which are used to transfer electricity. An electronic device implies some kind of use with a computer system. You will get your fill of both of them in college.
Hope this helps

Computer engineers make more money than most others. But, although engineering pays well, it doesn't pay THAT well. It really depends on the job and what field of work you go into. For example, most civil and mechanical engineers start out between $40k-$50k. And after a few years, get bumped up to $70k-$80k. I'm a mechanical engineer, and I didn't go the typical HVAC or powerplant route, and I'm now working for a construction management firm, making more money than I normally would have going the typical route. It also depends on experience and college background. For instance, a person with a masters or PhD is certainly going to get paid more than someone with only a bachelors. Another thing to think about is becoming a PE (Professional Engineer). This also has monetary perks.
The moral of the story is that there are base salaries, but that's just a starting point. Some engineers are making $30,000 a year, while some are making $400,000 a year. It all depends on what you do with your skills and the job market.

Sufficient? definitely. Unless, you decide to live in an area where the cost of living is outrageous, but, even then, there are ways to live sufficiently.
I make much more than sufficient money as an electrical engineer.
Computer hardware engineers are among the top-paid of all engineering categories.

To make a lot of money first get an engineering degree then transfer to management, perhaps get an MBA. An engineering background will make you an extremely valuable manager. Hwever, if you really like engineering the money is sufficient.
"If it is money that your are interested in then it's money you will get." From the movie. And if you don't know what movie the you aren't nerd enough to be an engineer.
