I recently did a credit report on myself and found several credit cards on there that I had no idea about. At first I assumed my identity had been stolen but then I discovered who had used my credit.

While I was in college, my mom used my social security to get several credit cards using my credit. She was having financial difficulty at the time and used the cards to pay for bills and other expenses.

The limits on those cards were in the thousands and she has maxed them all out. She is unable to pay their balances in full but she has been making the monthly payments on them. She claims they are building my credit but I did not give her permission to do that. She did not inform me that she was using my credit.

What options are available to me in order to get these cards off my credit? I don't think her credit is good enough to take on these cards.

You will have to file a police report. Contact the credit bureaus and the credit card companies. If you don't file the police report, the credit card companies will not remove the cards from your name. In fact, you may have to prove to them that you really didn't know your mother did this.

By the way, maxed out credit cards are not helping your credit score. The ratio of debt to available credit limit is a big part of your score. Anything over 50% kills your score.

You were correct to assume that your identity had been stolen. Even if she is your mother, it is still identity theft for her to use your social security number to obtain credit cards.

Put a fraud alert on your credit reports. Contact the card issuers and tell them that the accounts are not yours. If you ignore the situation and she stops making the payments, they might try to collect from you.

I agree with bdancer, my Wife went through this same thing with her Son several years ago and the only way we got it cleared up was by filing a police report.

As soon as she did this and sent a copy to the credit bureaus it was cleared from her credit.

The only thing I can think of is to talk to an attorney--and take legal action. The sooner the better. You could be screwed for years--maybe life--due to this. You will feel bad doing this but basically she did it to herself--you are not doing it to her. Good Luck.

Claim fraud and file a police report against her or you'll be screwed! Don't worry about her she did'nt care about you! A so what if she's your Mom you are her son she did not have a thought about you when she did that.
