I have had migraines I since I started my cycle & got put on BC for irrgular cycles when I was 12 years old. I would have them everyday & they would last for weeks on end. I would have maybe 2 or 3 days out of a month that I didn't have a migraine. I am 27 now, up until I was 19/20 I had just OTC drugs for them then I got put on Verapamil, that seemed to help for a while then stopped. I've tried AMERGE & Imitrex tablets. Then I lost ins. so I just went back to OTC drugs. I've just recently been tried on Zonegran, didn't work. And now Im on Topamax, I can only do the 200 mg because of the side effects. I have Imitrex injections for when I get one. I always get one the week before my cylce & the week of which is probably hormonal. Im doing a chiro right now & that doesn't seem to be helping. I've had a MRI & came back fine. Im having breakthrough headaches more & more...and was wondering if anyone knows of anything that I could do for them since the meds are wearing off???

Amber,
So sorry - I'm with you girl. I've tried everything, Just about. All the things you mentioned. I just got put on Zonegran. I did try GelStat. It's a herbal remedy I found by reading the book, LIVING WELL WITH MIGRAINE DISEASE AND HEADACHES, by Teri Robert. She said it helped her 50-75%of the time. So I bought some, and waiting for my next shipment. It has Feverfew (which goes back to the 1800's-used as aspirin) and the other herb in it, is Ginger. ( a chinese medicine for nausea) .Try it, it may help. It helped mine some. I took it with a pain pill. Hang in there. That's all we can do, until these people come up with a "real" cure!

Birth control pills can make migraines worse. Are you still on them? If so, you might see what your doctor thinks about a trial of being off them.

As for the preventative medications (the Verapamil and Topamax) - oftentimes, folks find they have to try several of them before they find one that works well; unfortunately, there's no way for a doctor to simply look at you and predict which one will work well for you - often trial and painful error is required. Another such medication you may want to discuss is Inderal (aka propanolol).

Also you might ask your doctor if s/he thinks you're developing analgesic rebound headaches...
