The basic difference between the two is their Mission and how the President and the Government get to use them.

The Marines are essential limited to any land that oceanic, littorals, or riverine in nature.

They are deployable by the president without the consult to the house or the senate.

They are limited in size to 178,000 as stipulated by a act of Congress.

The US Army's mission "conducts full spectrum operations within the US military's area of operations in order to deter aggression, advance regional security/cooperation, respond to crises, and fight to win."

With that said, in short the mission of the US Army is to engage, close, and defeat it's opponents on the field of battle.

The US Army has more "stuff" at it's disposal than the USMC. Tanks, Artillery, Helicopters, etc..They are the PRIMARY land combat force for the USA.

They have no size limits, and is currently a hair over 1 million strong.

There are more specialists, and specialties in the US ARMY than the USMC..

In the USMC everyone is a infantryman first and foremost.

Not much. Ive seen both sides. Marines have a tighter brotherhood than army. The training is fairly the same except stress levels are higher than army. Dont believe the slogan "worlds finest fighting force" is a recruiting compain slogan. Marines are bad as$ warriors but surely not the finest of the world. Marines have low numbers. Last time i checked they dont even break 300,000 troops. Army is massive compared to marines. Pay abd benifits is the same dispite popular rumors. If u want strong brotherhood and even stronger tradition thats still practiced in all ativities, marines is for u. If u want something less stressful on the mind, then go army. Oh yeah...marine corps doesnt have doctors or clergy. They use the navy's as is the army does have their own doctors and clergy.

The Army can do anything the Marines can plus some more. However the Marines are more specialized in certain areas. Evacuations and Amphibious Actions for example. The Army is more generalized. The Army has a lot of things the Marines don't, like heavy forces and other specializations like Civil Affairs. The Marines are built for smaller scale packaged deployments where the Army is made for large scale.

I am Army, but I had a lot of Marine instructors. One once said, if it is battalion level or below, give it to the Marines. If it is Brigade level or above, give it to the Army.

The army is bigger and operates in a large scale. The smallest unit that the Army usually sends is a brigade which is between 3300 and 3900 men and women. Marines operate at battalion level which is about 500-1000 men and women. Marines are used as a stop gap measure while the army mobilize into the theater of war.

Marines are essentially Naval infantry, and their mission is to project US Naval power ashore. Used correctly, the Marines establish a door for the Army to go into high gear. They have different missions, and when employed correctly are the best fighting force in the world. The only real difference is Amphibious warfare, which is the Marines forte, and jet aircraft. That, and we are one hell of a lot better looking. Especially in the mud.

Marines have a different combat philosophy than Army. Marines specialize in fast assaults, whereas Army (inf.) tends to parrol, ambush, subvert, and has special small units for specialized missions. The Marines are essentially an "In your Face" Assault Force. I am retired Army Special Forces ...(RVN, '68-70) and many of my friends are marines... (there are no ex-Marines) Both branches have a job to do, ... and they do it quite well. BTW.... The US Army has won over 2300 Medals of Honor, .... the Marines have won less than 300. Just a note. One more thing ... There are NO gays in the US Army !! hahahaha !!

Army is extremely ground oriented. they have heavy artillery, heavy armor and they work in conjunction with the air force.

marines are more land and sea orientated, and they have less heavy armor and heavy equipment. They are used for amphibious assaults and also ground assaults. They have their own support units. ( they have their own air support)
