Some multi-function cellphones (like blackberrys) have the ability to turn off the transmitter. Check yours to see if it has such a setting. If not, removing the SIM will serve the same purpose. Just for giggles I turned on my cellphone while I was flying last week. Never got a signal the entire flight, so you can't use the phone to call anyone anyway. I believe the rule is based on the belief that cell phones will interphere with the plane's equipment... which is pure bunk (since some airlines allow the use of cell phones in-air).

Cell phones have absolutely no effect on the aircraft avionics. They are forbidden so that you'll slide your credit card into that phone on the seat back in front of you. We often have half a dozen talking during taxi takeoff, landing, whenever the boss and his boys get a signal. In all the years since the first cell phones they've been in constant use in the back of our Gulfstream and Boeing with no affect whatsoever. And we have manuals for every black box up there and not one mentions any adverse effects from cell phones. And they could not be certified without such a statement if there was anything to it.

After you have removed your sim card, the phone has no network. Therefore, the phone is not sending or recieving any signals. So no, it wont effect the flight transmission.

The (US) FCC forbids cell phones in flight because there is line of sight access to 'many' base stations. Interference with on board avionics is also possible. There is the potential for cell phone use during flight in the future, but there will be a 'base-station' on board the aircraft with a dedicated relay to the ground.

if it does not transmit when you remove the card then yes, you may use it.
check with the flight attendant

and to answer the previous answerer. Cell phones are turned off because they can interfere with the aircraft's systems and communications but also, they can be used to set off a bomb in the cargo hold for example

Many newer phones have an "Airplane Mode" that shuts off the transmitter and receiver. Look in the tools section of the menu.
