My one year old has had the stomach flu since Friday night. He vomited all night the first night and vomited and had diarrhea the next day. Saturday night he went to the ER to get IV fluids and yesterday he slept most of the day. Today he is still sleepy and weak and still does not want to eat or drink. I have to force feed him fluids - could it be something other than the flu or does it usually last this long?

When my daughter was 18 months she had the stomach flu, the vomiting and diarrhea lasted about 3 days. Vomiting the first day and a half and diarrhea the last day. She was drinking, but eating VERY little, if at all. When I called the doctor, they had me check for signs of dehydration and asked me a bunch of questions. She was not dehydrated and it was basically a waiting game. By the 4th day she was weak, but feeling better. By day 5, she was getting back to her old self again.

When in doubt, call you doctor. Hope your little one feels better.

My son had diarrhea for 16 days when he was 10 months old. I had called my pediatrician's office after day 3 of diarrhea and they told me that diarrhea up to 20 days can be normal. I was quite upset that they had brushed this off this way, but it did finally go away after 16 days. There were days that were much worse than others. Some days he was going every 15 minutes and other days he still had the scoots but were more like every 2 hours and alternated on and off. After the 16 days, he didn't poop at all for 2 days which was a shock to me. My pediatrician had said to give him clear fluids and light food and lay off the formula as much as I could. After the fact I'm not sure if there would have been anything else they could have done because like I said it did go away on its own. They did say that if he developed vomiting and a fever to bring him in to be checked because he may need IV fluids and Pedialyte because under age 1 babies can dehydrate quickly when they start vomiting. He did not seem to have any other symptoms except that some days when he was going every 15 minutes he started to look pale. I would ask if Pedialyte would be an option to restore electrolytes to the baby. I think questions need to be asked if your baby could have food poisoning, or rotavirus and go through the symptoms carefully to see what she might have.

Take him back to the hospital and tell them the symptoms and let them evaluate the cause. It could be a bad case of food poisoning. He needs to maintain fluids and should be monitored often by a doctor.
