Of Course, it's a sickness that takes over a person's feeling and majority of the time, that person wants to be alone, so yes depression can make a person feel like they want to be alone.

Depression makes you want to be alone and that is why it is like a snowball rolling down a hill. I've only been really depressed once when I lost a full scholarship and flunked out of school. I basically stayed in my room for 6 months, only leaving to go to work and occassionally find something that I could eat. Luckily, after the 6 months I had to leave for the Army and that pulled me back into a normal life. You just have to find something that pulls you back into a normal life. What is the only thing that cheers you up? Once you have identified that thing, start looking for it.

It's possible.

Sometimes the depressed mood may relate more to internal processes or even be triggered by them. Pessimistic views of life or a lack of self-esteem can lead to depression.

According to the DSM-IV-TR criteria for diagnosing a major depressive episode (cautionary statement) five (or more) of the following symptoms must be present for a period of at least two weeks and represent a change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure, that is, one of the first two symptoms listed below:

Feelings of sadness or the seeming inability to feel emotion (emptiness).
A decrease in the amount of interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, daily activities.
Changing appetite and marked weight gain or loss.
Disturbed sleep patterns, such as insomnia, loss of REM sleep, or excessive sleep (hypersomnia).
Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day.
Fatigue, mental or physical, also loss of energy.
Intense feelings of guilt, nervousness, helplessness, hopelessness, worthlessness, isolation/loneliness and/or anxiety.
Trouble concentrating, keeping focus or making decisions or a generalized slowing and obtunding of cognition, including memory.
Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), desire to just "lie down and die" or "stop breathing", recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for completing suicide.

Yup. It's called "distancing" & people do it for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes they do it because they don't think they are interesting enough for the people around them. Sometimes they don't know how to say how they feel or think that they have to "perform" for people in order to have them talk to them. It's different for each person.

If you are this person, try bringing yourself back to society slowly. Talk to your closest friend & share what is going on- they will be willing to help. You may want to seek professional help if you can't handle this all by yourself. There's nothing wrong with getting help.

If it's a friend, then just be gentle with them for the most part. Getting angry & yanking them to a party can actually have the opposite effect & cause them to start avoiding you as well as everyone else.
