I want my protagonist to have a gun that is stronger than the standard issue pieces given out to cops (9mm glocks?). I first wrote that he had a .45 Desert Eagle(cuz it's f*ckin' sweet), but then that he had a S&W Model 29 double action .44 Magnum Revolver with an 8 and two thirds inch barrel. This novel takes place in the late 70's early eighties. So could you tell me what kind of gun, model, would be appropiate and what were the standard issue guns back then. Thank you very much.

Standard issue in most places in the 70's was a Smith & Wesson Model 19 .357

Some Agencies would use a Colt (or similar version) 1911 style .45 semi-auto. That has a good amount of "power".....though the .357 is not a wimp. And honestly, aside from Dirty Harry, I don't know of too many cops that carry an 8+ inch barrelled revolver.

In the 70's to very early 80's just about every law enforcement agency in this country carried a .38 cal or .357 cal, 4 inch barrel, six shot revolver. You could get a .38 or .357 Mag with a 2 inch barrel as well. The MP's were carrying .45 cal pistols.

If watch the old 'Dirty Harry' movies he had a .44 cal, but no agencies really carried them.

If you want to be true to the time... Go with a .357 Mag, Smith & Wesson or Colt. And believe me, a .357 Mag is a POWERFUL handgun!

Standard issue at that time was the S&W Model 10 .38 caliber six shot revolver with a 4 inch barrel and blued coating. it was usually reloaded from loose rounds held in various "dump pouches" on the officer's duty belt. The dump pouch is a leather pocket that opens from a snap at the bottom and the loose rounds fall into the palm of you hand.

Your character should carry a customized Colt 1911 in .45 caliber. Maybe have it with extended magazines that hold 10 or 11 rounds instead of the standard 8. Also with the extended "beaver tail" grip safety and skeletonized hammer and trigger. An improved extractor and widened chamber for more reliable brass extraction would give him an advatage too.

Anything aside from that would be European like the FN HI-Power, but it is chambered in 9 millimeter.

Ruger had come out with a 357 revolver, convertible, 4 5/8 barrel, and of course it fired .38sp.......the convertible part was it came w/ an x-tra cylinder, that allowed you to shoot 9mm, in a .357 frame, that fired like a .22 w/ deadly accuracy......3 guns in one............about this same time, mid-late 70s, they were stoppin cops from using .357s, because the bulletts were going thru people and hitting by-standers......alot were switching to S&W model 59/9mm w/ lg clip......I thought Berettas model 92 was a better gun..........

44mag or .357 with at least a 4" barrel. A Colt Python comes to mind, but then that was 30+ years ago.
