I would say get them a card.

Address the card to both of them (and make sure you get the spelling of her name right....) and do not write anything cute or overly familiar in it. Just say - "wishing your new arrival the best of health and a promising future" or something like that and sign your full name.

The only times you HAVE to give a gift are when you ATTEND a shower or a child's birthday party. If you WISH to give a gift to a co-worker you don't know very well, I'd make it something very inexpensive and totally impersonal, like some infant sized sox or T-shirts.

Give the gift privately so that it is HIS choice whether or not to mention it to others. Make sure you present the gift to him in a way that makes clear it's MOSTLY for his wife, but since you've never met the lady you'd like him to play delivery man. You'll have to really mind your Ps & Qs here and make sure it doesn't look like you're aim is a closer relationship with the new daddy. My personal feeling is that a congratulations card addressed to "Mr & Mrs" would be the high road here.

Gifts for babies are fun and easy. You can get just about anything and the couple will be happy.

Penney's has a "layette" gift - in blue and pink respectively. In it is a blanket, a bib, sock, etc. Very simple and the couple can certainly use any of those gifts.

If you're not sure, a gift card from Penney's, Sears, Wal-Mart or any store would be fine.

Get a nice card and write in your "congrats!"

Sure, you can buy them a little something. Maybe some swaddling blankets would be a low-key easy gift. Other low-key options are baby board books, a stuffed animal (no buttons, pieces that can come off) or a little outfit. If you have a girlfriend, wife or sister, just make her pick it out for you, LOL.

If you have known him for a couple of months and are close, why didn't he introduce his wife to you?

Anyways, I would suggest you don't give them a gift and don't get too close to them socially. If you had been close to him outside work, you should stop doing that too or you'll be viewed as the third party to their marriage.

He's a friend--get the gift. This might be a good time to introduce yourself--unless you are one of those friends at work who's gotten too close and now you feel awkward about meeting her.

Otherwise, I don't see it being taken awkwardly at all.

If he is your friend get the gift. She shouldn't get weird about a gift for their baby from a co worker.

Give something small like a little baby hat or a pair of baby socks.

It's a nice gesture, but not so big a gift that it'll be awkward.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with giving a gift. He is your friend, I would also write a sincerely not in a card wishing him and the new addition to their family well.

just because the lady carried the baby doesnt mean you can't congratulate the guy too!!! it's a new addition to their family, so give the whole family a gift... don't be shady about it... a new baby is such a blessing, whether you know the couple or just one of the parents.
