Ok so my sister brought home 8 five week old puppies. The owner left the puppies and their mother alone for 5 days while he went on vacation. My sister didn't want to leave them because they were just sitting outside in the dirt and were not going to be brought inside anywhere out of the cold. So she brought them home. Yesterday, she brought them back to their mother, and she rejected them by snarling, growling, and biting them. My sister bought some puppy food and all the puppies will eat except one of them. He is a brindle male. He hasny eaten in a couple of days. He also has a little infection on his you know what. However my sister took him to the vet and they told her just to clean it really well. I really need some advice. Any suggestions are welcome and GREATLY needed.
Thanks =D

At five weeks old, the pups more then likely have not been weined off the mother milk and not ready for solid food.

You should bottle feed these pups and get them through this.

When pups nurse from their mother, they get the building blocks for the development of their immune system. It's very important that they get what their little bodies need right now.

You can find Mother's milk replacement at PetSmart or most other Pet stores. You need to bottle feed these pups for another week or two.

Slowing introduce a transition food before going to solid puppy food. Here's the formula for weining the pups to food.

While bottle feeding, start out with small amounts of a paste you make with the following ingredients. (puppy food, hard boiled eggs, poweredmilk, Pet-tabs(vitimans)) grind all this up in a blender/food processor, add water to form a smooth paste. The pups will love it, it's full of what they need right now, and start to take them off the milk replacement.

It should take you about 3-5 days to get them off milk and onto the paste that you mix up. After that, start to mix the paste with the solid puppy food you choose (I like IAMS), with every day using less paste and more solid food.

If you do it in this fashion, the pups should be fine.

and btw, SHAME ON THE FOLKS WHO LEFT THIS DOG WITH PUPS. I really hope you don't return them to this family as they have proven themselves unworthy.

Best of luck

Don't worry these are common problems when having a puppy. He's only 10 weeks old so he's defiantly gunna have accidents and a chewing frenzy. Any breed can be difficult. It's just personality and how much of a leader you present yourself. Because he's a male he will pee more often rather than a *****. The boys can't hold it as long as the girls. But starting with the peeing. Make sure after playing, eating, sleeping and drinking he goes out side. It's usually 10 or more minutes he'll need to go pee. As he gets older he'll need it less. But every time he's about to poo/pee say "Toilet" or a different word. After he did the business praise him. Say good "___" whatever word you said. Do this all the time and he will pick it up as a command. Always keep an eye on a puppy, when he sniffs the ground and circles around it usually mean he's about "To go" pick him up and quickly take him to the garden, wait and say the word. If he does go potty inside the house make sure you say a firm "No" take him into his crate or garden and clean up as quick as possible. Make sure you get something that removes the odor, that way he wont come back to the same place. Go search in a pet shop, they'll most likely have it. The biting is normal and they do it for two reasons. First it's how they play and how the encourage you to play and secondly it's because they're teething. If he bites, replace with a toy or bone. If he carries on you yelp really loud and walk away ignoring him. That's what litter mates do when it gets too rough. If he still does it, yelp again and firmly say "No" and put him in his crate for at least 5 minutes. All dogs will grow out of it as long as you teach him not to bite. These are pretty simple and basic training you can do. Any puppy and dog are trainable and don't worry. Puppies are tough work but are pretty much worth it! :)

At 5 weeks old, the puppies were probably getting weaned by the mother dog. When I had this problem (stray had pups in my garage!), I blended (in the blender) puppy food, hot water and a little baby formula (to give it a milk-flavor)--although Pediasure works well, too. This gives the puppies a gruel/mush to lap/chew. The puppy that's not eating may not be able to bite hard food. Puppies shoudl eat every 3-4 hours around the clock, although we've had to skip a middle of the night feeding because we work. If he isn't doing normal puppy things like paying constantly, wrestling with his littermates, etc.. and instead seems lethargic, quiet, etc.., he could have parvovirus, which is deadly about 75% of the time even when treated, according to our vet (we had a 6 week old rescue puppy come from a shelter where she'd gotten parvo and was dead within 3 days, even with $500 worth of medical intervention.) Parvo is EXTREMELY contagious and the virus can live in the dirt for years. The vets CAN test for this. It is characterized by lethargy, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

Keeping the litter together until they're 10-12 weeks old is best for their social development. They learn bite-inhibition and social skills that will make them much better pets.

To try to get one the one to eat, try giving him some soft food. Some dogs perfer soft food for it probably tastes better to them.

Also since they are only 5 weeks old, they are still nursing. Sinc ethe mother rejected them, go and get some puppy milk formula from a pet store. Use a baby bottle and feed it as many times as the directions say.

Make sure you keep an eye on the puppies, make sure they are all eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom.

Good luck!

sounds like a real catch 22...instead of helping them, she hurt them, but is giving them a fighting chance....
in the future, she should have just called animal control.

anyway....
if i were her, i'd take the pups to the local shelter, where they have tech and vets who can give them the proper care. plus, they can help find them good homes and they can tell her wo to contact to report the neglectful owner.

take care.

5 weeks is usually when you start to wean them and best if you moisten the food ( the food should be puppy food and not adult dog food)
Also they should get their 1st shots at 6 weeks old
