Actually lumber is measured in board feet. That is a piece of lumber 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long.
Linear feet is not a measurement unless you define the piece of lumber as by width and thickness. As an example: 12 linear feet of 2 x 4 lumber. (To add to the confusion, a 2 x 4 is actually 1 1/2" by 3 1/2")

A linear foot is the length in feet no matter the width or thickness..example : a 2"x4" x 12'-0" is 12 linear feet
a board foot is the volume of lumber which is of any size and its divisional measurement is 144 cubic inches. so........
a 2" x 4" x 12'-0" = 960cu inches divide by 144cubic inches and that ='s 6.66..board feet..
See there ya got two for the price of one from the E...

It is the length of a particular stick of wood. It only depends on how long it is and ignores how wide or how deep it is. Those go into Board Feet Measurements not into Linear feet ones.
