I'm new to photography and I need to buy a good DSLR to start with. I am trying to chose between the above models. What do you think is the best. (Better if you have hands on experience)
Cost is also a factor!
What are the significant differences?
Is it a issue that the EOS 30D don't have the dust reduction mechnism?

If you dont know much about photography I would suggest the 400D or the 350D. The 40D and 30D are geared more towards someone who doesnt need a whole lot of automatic settings like landscape and portrait, they are also more robust and cost more. The XT and XTi are both excellent cameras for the price. You still have manual modes (shutter priority and aperture proirity) but they also have portrait and night time and full auto modes.

If you dont know how to use a light meter or know what ASA or aperture is, get one of the Rebels. You will be much less frustrated. Also you would benefit from a photography class. Most stores offer them when you make a big purchase. Take it, it really does help.

Have you taken any photography classes? If not, that is the first thing you should do. You will learn about light, ISO, shutter speeds and f-stops and composition. Once you have a year or so of classes you'll have a better idea of exactly what you want and need in a camera.

It is possible to learn photography on your own but its much much more difficult.

We attend school to learn math, history, science, etc. Why would photography be any different? We learn to drive and get a driver's license before we buy a car, don't we?

I answered a similar question to, look into any of these DSLRs, you can't go wrong with any one of them, they have there pros and cons but it just come down to personal preference.

8MP class: Canon XT or Nikon's D40
10MP class Canon XTi or Nikon's D40x

I chose the XTi from Canon with an 18-250 f/3.5 Macro zoom lens from Tamron.

I have the 400D and to be honest - i'm not that impressed with it - but that could be because i haven't learnt how to yet!

ALSO one thing that i was told AFTER i bought the camera - was that the lens that comes WITH the camera is not that good.
You should buy the BODY ONLY - and then a seperate better lens.
